at VB nationals

Hilo High’s Makoa Tandal, Kealakehe’s Taylor Dorr, Hawaii Prep’s Noah Schenk and Kaehu Kaaa, formerly from Kamehameha-Hawaii, were on the Oahu club team Kuikahi 18’s Red that finished third at the Boys Junior National Championships.

Kaehu and Tandal both made the All-Tourney team. Kuikahi is coached by Teoni Obrey, the Hawaii Baptist Academy coach.

Pilipa‘a, under coach Ecko Osorio, concluded a strong run in the tournament with an 11th place finish.

Pilipa‘a was comprised of Big Island prep standouts.

Sunrise Athletics

The 2nd annual Sunrise Athletics 5k walk/run and 1.5 mile fun run/walk will be held July 26 at Liliuokalani Gardens.

meeting Tuesday

An informational meeting for Waiakea High football will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the school’s cafeteria for parents of all students interesting in playing. The agenda will include summer workout schedule, tryout dates and participation requirements, 2014 season schedule, preseason fundraising planning, and spirit pack order.

Puna AYSO

sign-ups slated

Puna AYSO soccer is accepting registration for 2014 fall season, which runs from mid August till November. AYSO accepts new and returning girls and boys between the ages of 4 and 18. Participants must be 4 as of 8/01/14. Practice days and game schedule to be determined once registration is complete.

Players can register on-line at www.eayso.org -Region 738. Print 3 copies of the registration form and mail with payment to: AYSO PUNA, P.O. Box 955, Keaau, HI 96749. Registration fee for Fall 2014 is $65. Late registration after July 27 will be $75.

AYSO is an all-volunteer organization which promotes good sportsmanship and positive coaching. Enrollment is open to all, and everyone plays on equally balanced teams. We train all coaches and referees. For further information call 965-6648.

Softball tourney

slated in August

Teams are being sought for the “Battling for Cancer” 14-inch softball tournament scheduled Aug. 23-24 at Walter Victor Complex.

The tourney includes kupunas, men’s and women’s mixed teams. Entry fee is $200 per team.

UHH Baseball

Academy ongoing

The 2014 Vulcans Baseball Academy continues into July at the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball field.

The academy is divided into four one-hour, age-group sessions. Time slots are 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. (16-18 year olds), 10:45 – 11:45 a.m. (11-12 year olds), 12:15 – 1:15 p.m (9-10 year olds) and 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. (13-15 year olds). Each age-group is limited to 12 participants.

Upcoming dates of the academy are: July 3, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21 and 23.

Women’s hoops officiating clinic

“Step Up, USA” will hold a clinic for women’s basketball officials who would like to develop their officiating skills to the next level.

In conjunction with the County Department of Parks and Recreation an officiating clinic for women’s basketball officials will take place on July 24-26.

The clinic will be conducted by Andrea Osborne, Coordinator of Women’s basketball officials for the Big West Conference, Foothill Conference, and University of California San Marcos.

You will be offered an opportunity to receive classroom instruction on three person mechanics, and on court evaluations. Along with opportunities to work with collegiate officials.

Registration fee for Big Island officials is free. But you still need to register at stepupandcallit.com website.

Coach Yagi

Hoops Camp

The county Department of Parks and Recreation invites keiki basketball players to the 2nd Annual Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp, scheduled July 21-24 in Hilo.

Open to boys and girls 9 to 17 years old, the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp is named in honor of the legendary former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach who helped guide the Vulcans-Hawaii Basketball School for 37 years.

It will be held at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and the Panaewa Covered Play Courts.

Teenage campers will receive personalized instruction from a team of coaches as they practice agility, ball-handling and other drills from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. Then, the youth players will showcase their skills by competing in full-court games from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Campers age 9 to 12 years old will receive similar instruction from 9 a.m. until noon. Kids in this younger age group will play four-on-four games between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Early registration is $60 per child. The cost will rise to $70 for players registering after Monday, July 14. All participants will receive a camp shirt and group photo.

Bill O’Rear, a former Vulcan star and UHH Hall of Fame inductee who coached at the Vulcans school for more than 30 years, is returning as lead clinician.

Daphne Honma, Division II coach of the year following her first season at the helm of the Honokaa girls basketball program, also will assist.

UHH women’s head basketball coach David Kaneshiro and his staff has graciously agreed to share their basketball expertise during the four-day skill-development camp.

Volleyball at

Waiakea-Uka

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation invites keiki to sign up for youth volleyball programs offered at Hilo’s Waiakea-Uka Gym.

Boys 7 to 14 years old and girls 7 to 10 years old can play in the P&R’s youth volleyball league that starts in September.

Registration is at Waiakea-Uka Gym. Space is limited to two teams.
